Story is a small community located in north-central Wyoming about 20 minutes south of the city of Sheridan. As of the 2010 census, the population was 828 residents. The scenic village of Story is nestled along the banks of Piney Creek, in the foothills of the Big Horn Mountains. The town is often used as a "base camp" for hikers and ATV enthusiasts. The region contains some of the top rated trails in the state of Wyoming. Other attractions in Story include the fish hatchery grounds, which are open year round. The visitor center on the grounds is open from April 15 to September 15. The fish hatchery includes educational displays and hatchery ponds that show lake trout hatching in April and May. Also, just a short drive south of Story is the historical site of Fort Phil Kearny. The fort was built in 1866 and was one of just three military outposts along the Bozeman Trail. Fort Phil Kearny was abandoned in 1868 under the terms of the Treaty of Fort Laramie and burned to the ground soon after. Volunteers began archeology digs in 1999 as the first step in reconstructing a portion of the old fort. A museum and bookstore is also located on the site. Story is host to the annual Bozeman Trail Days, which features tours of the historic forts and battles sites in the area. It also includes a living history camp. This special event is held in mid-June.

Story Weather & Climate

Southwest Montana is a mountainous area at between the 4,000 - 7,000 foot elevation, and almost exactly halfway between the equator and the north pole. Due to the elevation, the climate is sub-arctic, with cold, sometimes bitterly cold winters, and warm, but brief summers. During summer, the temperature rarely exceeds 78 degrees F., with an average low of 41 degrees F. Summer thunderstorms are common. Spring and autumn are cool days and cold nights, although fall generally has plenty of sunshine. Winters in the higher elevations can be very cold with nighttime lows dropping below zero most nights. Precipitation is highly variable and ranges from 15 to 80 inches in the southwest portions of Yellowstone National Park. Snow is actually possible in any month of the year, with an average of 150 inches at Yellowstone Lake, to twice that amount in the higher elevations.
