Big-Horn-National-Forest is located in north-central Wyoming, east of the continental divide, near the Montana border. It consists of over 1.1 million acres of diverse landscape and is one of the oldest national forests in the United States, created in 1897. Elevations in the forest range from 5,000 feet along the grass-covered lowlands to over 13,000 feet on top of Cloud Peak, the highest point in the Big Horn Mountains. The Cloud Peak Wilderness Area is contained within Big Horn National Forest and contains 189,000 acres. No motorized vehicles are allowed in this area - access is either on foot or horseback only. U.S. Highway 14, also called the Bighorn Scenic Byway, crosses the middle of the forest. U.S. The Medicine Wheel Passage (U.S. Highway 14A), crosses in the north, and Cloud Peak Highway (U.S. 16) crosses the highest pass in Big Horn National Forest at 9,677 feet elevation. Big Horn National Forest contains everything from lush grasslands, crystal-clear lakes to alpine meadows and glacially-carved valleys to rolling hills, cascading waterfalls and stark mountain peaks. There are over 1,500 miles of trails in the Big Horn National Forest, 32 campgrounds, 14 picnic areas, 7 lodges, several reservoirs and miles and miles of sparkling streams. Just a few of the things to do include hiking, fly-fishing, backpacking, horseback riding, mountain biking, snowmobiling, skiing, sledding, scenic drives and wildlife viewing. As you would imagine, the photographic opportunities are endless.

Big Horn National Forest Weather & Climate

Northern Wyoming has a semi-arid climate with cold, dry winters and warm, wet summers. In the southern high desert area, rainfall is 6 to 10 inches. The lower portion of the basin receives 5 to 8 inches and is the driest part of the state. The Big Horn Basin is a good example of how the effect of the mountains block the flow of moisture laden air from the east, as well as from the west. Summer temperatures typically range from the 80s and 90s during the day, but cools rapidly to the 40s or 50s at night. Summer temperatures can peak at over 100 degrees. Winter temperatures range in the 20s and 30s with lows averaging the 10s (F) and 20s (F). Occasionally, it can drop below 0 (F) with extreme wind chill factors. Most snowfall is received January through March, although it's possible to snow even in May.
