Buffalo is city located in north-central Wyoming in the foothills of the Big Horn Mountains. As of the 2010 census, the population was 4,585. Buffalo sits at the crossroads of I-90 and I-25 and U.S. Highway 16, also called the Cloud Peak Scenic Byway, which is the most used route to Yellowstone National Park. Attractions in Buffalo include the historic Carnegie Library, which houses the Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum and over 15,000 artifacts from the American Old West. Other nearby historic places to visit include Fort Phil Kearney, Fettermans Massacre Site, Wagon Box Fight and the infamous Hole in the Wall hideout of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The city of Buffalo is just a short drive to the spectacular Big Horn National Forest and outdoor activities such as fly fishing, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, camping, golf scenic drives, picnicking, and skiing are all within easy reach. The Clear Creek Trail System is a linked, 12-mile system that starts on the east side of Buffalo and ends in the rugged foothills of the Big Horn Mountains. Buffalos Main Street is lined with historic structures, art galleries, shops and restaurants. Step back in time to the days of Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid at the fully-restored Occidental Hotel, Saloon & Virginian Restaurant in the heart of downtown Buffalo. This building dates to 1880 and you can search for bullet holes in the saloon, enjoy fine dining in the old bank vault, or sleep in rooms where outlaws slept. What a fun time for history buffs!

Buffalo Weather & Climate

North-central Wyoming experiences a semi-arid climate. Winters are long, cold and dry. Summers are short, hot and wet. Spring and autumn are short and mild. The average elevation in Wyoming is about 6,700 feet above sea level. Even where there are no mountains, the average elevation over the southern part of the state is well over 6,000 feet, while much of the northern portion is 3,500 feet. This accounts for the cool nights, even after a hot summer day. In the high plains, freezing temperatures may occur at any time during the summer. Most precipitation falls during spring and early summer. Sunshine across the state ranges from 60 percent of the time during the winter to about 75 percent during the summer. Snow falls frequently from November through May. At lower elevations, especially the Big Horn Basin, snow is very light to moderate.
