Big-Horn is a small community located in Sheridan County in north-central Wyoming. As of the 2010 census, the population was 490 residents. The unincorporated village of Big Horn lies on the eastern slope of the Big Horn Mountains along Little Goose Creek, which is a tributary of the Tongue River. It sits at an elevation of 4,200 feet. The community of Big Horn was established in 1882 by cattle and sheep ranchers. This continues today, with large ranches located along the base of the mountains. A lot of activities in the town of Big Horn center around school activities, especially during football season. In summer, the community attracts polo players from around the world who enjoy the laid-back atmosphere rather than the crowded, busier locals of Long Island, Palm Beach, and Santa Barbara, etc. In May, the Big Horn Equestrian Center is often host to the Mars Big Horn Mountain Spring Cup. The village of Big Horn is near the Big Horn National Forest, a spectacular park that consists of over 1.1 million acres. Big Horn National Forest contains everything from lush grasslands and alpine meadows to grand mountain peaks. There are over 1,500 miles of trails in the Big Horn National Forest, 32 campgrounds, 14 picnic areas, 7 lodges, several reservoirs and miles of streams for fishing. Other things to do include backpacking, horseback riding, mountain biking, snowmobiling, skiing, and scenic drives.

Big Horn Weather & Climate

Southwest Montana is a mountainous area at between the 4,000 - 7,000 foot elevation, and almost exactly halfway between the equator and the north pole. Due to the elevation, the climate is sub-arctic, with cold, sometimes bitterly cold winters, and warm, but brief summers. During summer, the temperature rarely exceeds 78 degrees F., with an average low of 41 degrees F. Summer thunderstorms are common. Spring and autumn are cool days and cold nights, although fall generally has plenty of sunshine. Winters in the higher elevations can be very cold with nighttime lows dropping below zero most nights. Precipitation is highly variable and ranges from 15 to 80 inches in the southwest portions of Yellowstone National Park. Snow is actually possible in any month of the year, with an average of 150 inches at Yellowstone Lake, to twice that amount in the higher elevations.
