Moran
is a small community located in west-central Wyoming, northeast of the city of Jackson. It's within the Grand Teton National Park and serves as one of the fee collection entrances to the park. It's an unincorporated community with a population of about 295 full-time residents and sits at an elevation of 6,749 feet above sea level. The community of Moran was named after the English artist, Thomas Moran, who accompanied a geological survey expedition to the Yellowstone National Park region. Although unincorporated, Moran has its' own zip code. It's considered part of the Jackson micropolitan statistical area and is known as the state's coldest continually inhabited place. The record low temperature in Moran was (minus) -63 degrees F. This is due to the high altitude of the village, along with radiational cooling, which causes severe wintertime conditions. Recreational activities in the region include alpine skiing, snowmobiling, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, ice fishing, hiking, mountain climbing, whitewater rafting, horseback riding, golf, fly-fishing and camping. Nearby Jackson is home to a number of fine arts organizations, including the Congressionally-designated National Museum of Wildlife Art, the Grand Teton Music Festival, and the Center for the Arts.

Moran Weather & Climate

Northwestern Wyoming has a variable climate with large temperature swings. Generally, winters are long and cold and summers are short and mild to warm. Spring and autumn are brief transitional seasons. It's a fairly dry region, with 30 percent or less humidity. Precipitation averages nine inches of rain per year, which gives the area a semi-arid climate classification. Average annual snowfall is 39.7 inches, although some years it's much more. It sometimes snows during summer, and if it does, it's usually brief and melts quickly. This doesn't happen frequently, but there are sudden and drastic shifts in weather conditions anytime during the year. Wind is almost a constant condition in this region. Northwestern Wyoming enjoys 300 days of sunshine per year.
