Jackson-Hole
is a valley, located in west-central Wyoming near the Idaho border. The name came from early trappers and settlers who entered the valley from the north and east, coming down from steep mountain slopes, giving them the feeling of descending into a "hole." The only incorporated town in the valley is Jackson (sometimes referred to as "Jackson Hole.") The population of the town was 9,577 as of the 2010 census. This entire region is a major tourist attraction in all seasons of the year. Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks are nearby, as well as the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Snow King and Grand Targhee ski resort areas. Jackson Hole Valley is also a National Elk Refuge. Jackson is home to a number of fine arts organizations, including the Congressionally-designated National Museum of Wildlife Art, the Grand Teton Music Festival, and the Center for the Arts. The large arches of elk antlers (naturally shed antlers) at the four entrances to the town square are also popular attractions. Some of the recreational activities in the Jackson Hole area include hiking, whitewater rafting, fishing, golf, horseback riding, mountain climbing, biking, camping and picnicking. Winter in Jackson Hole brings a whole plethora of other outdoor activities. It's most well-known for its' downhill skiing, but there's also lots of opportunities for snowmobiling, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, sledding, dog sledding and more.

Southeastern Idaho has a unique four-season climate. The area's precipitation is approximately 20-30 inches, which is among the highest in southern Idaho. This unusually high precipitation is due to the unique geography of southern Idaho and Yellowstone. The Snake River Plain was formed by the Yellowstone hot spot across southern Idaho, and it forms a moisture channel that extends from the Pacific Ocean to Yellowstone area. This southeastern corner at the head of the Snake River Plain and at the end of the Yellowstone moisture channel gets as much snow as the typical ski towns of Colorado. In contrast, summers are hot and humidity is low throughout the state. Occasionally, moisture-laden air from the south produces thunderstorms.
