Wapiti
is a small, unincorporated community located in northwestern Wyoming at the eastern entrance to Yellowstone National Park. It lies along the North Fork of the Shoshone River in the Shoshone National Forest. The name Wapiti is the Cree Indian word for elk. The community of Wapiti is home to the Wapiti Ranger Station, which is a U.S. National Historic Landmark. Being so near Yellowstone National Park, the village of Wapiti has much to offer visitors. The park is well-known for its' geothermal features, especially Old Faithful Geyser, one of the most popular features in the park. Yellowstone Lake is one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the United States, and is centered over the Yellowstone Caldera, the largest super volcano on the North American continent. Amazingly, half of the world's geothermal features are located in Yellowstone National Park. From Wapiti, you can drive the grand loop road and see the park's main attractions by vehicle, or there are thousands of miles of trails for day hikes and backpacking. The park consists of over two million acres and wildlife that ranges from bison, moose, elk, pronghorn, bear, the gray wolf and 322 species of birds. Northwestern Wyoming has a variable climate with large temperature swings. Generally, winters are long and cold and summers are short and mild to warm. Spring and autumn are brief transitional seasons. It's a fairly dry region, with 30 percent or less humidity. Precipitation averages nine inches of rain per year, which gives the area a semi-arid climate classification. Average annual snowfall is 39.7 inches, although some years it's much more. It sometimes snows during summer, and if it does, it's usually brief and melts quickly. This doesn't happen frequently, but there are sudden and drastic shifts in weather conditions anytime during the year. Wind is almost a constant condition in this region. Northwestern Wyoming enjoys 300 days of sunshine per year.
