Cody is a city located in northwestern Wyoming that is considered the eastern gateway to Yellowstone National Park. An interesting historical note is that the town is named after William Frederick Cody, famously known as Buffalo Bill, due to his part in the creation of the original town. As of the 2010 census, the population of Cody was 9,520. Most of the towns activities and special events are focused on the interesting history and Old West culture of the area. Cody is home to the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, which actually contains five museums in one building. During the summer, reenactments of a wild-west shoot-out take place next to the historical Irma Hotel, which is still open for business today. Cody is also called the "Rodeo Capital of the World," and is host to the Cody Stampede Rodeo, a Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association rodeo. It's one of the largest rodeos in the country and has been held over the 4th of July holiday since 1919. The Cody Nites Rodeo is an amateur rodeo held every night June through August annually. Other attractions in the town include the Cody Firearms Museum and the Buffalo Bill Cody Stampede Rodeo Old Trail Town, which is a restoration of more than 25 historic Old West buildings and artifacts.

Cody Weather & Climate

Northwestern Wyoming has a variable climate with large temperature swings. Generally, winters are long and cold and summers are short and mild to warm. Spring and autumn are brief transitional seasons. It's a fairly dry region, with 30 percent or less humidity. Precipitation averages nine inches of rain per year, which gives the area a semi-arid climate classification. Average annual snowfall is 39.7 inches, although some years it's much more. It sometimes snows during summer, and if it does, it's usually brief and melts quickly. This doesn't happen frequently, but there are sudden and drastic shifts in weather conditions anytime during the year. Wind is almost a constant condition in this region. Northwestern Wyoming enjoys 300 days of sunshine per year.
