Rawlins is a town in Carbon County in south-central Wyoming. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,259 residents. The town was named for Union General John Aaron Rawlins, Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army.) The story goes that in 1867, while in command of the troops protecting the crew surveying the route of the first trans-continental railroad, General Rawlins requested a drink of cold water. A group of soldiers went out in search of water and discovered a fresh spring. Taking the water back to the General, Rawlins declared it was the "most refreshing drink he had ever tasted" and further exclaimed, If anything is ever named after me, I hope it will be a spring of water. The community was then named Rawlins Springs and later shortened to Rawlins. The town of Rawlins was incorporated in 1886 and was designated the seat of Carbon County. Historically, Carbon County has been traversed by the Overland Trail, Oregon Trail, Mormon Trail, and both the original route of the Union Pacific Railroad and the Lincoln Highway. Interstate 80 now crosses the county, although there are many scenic back roads and byways that offer lots of opportunities for photography and wildlife viewing. The town of Rawlins itself offers a charming atmosphere with several fine restaurants, family-style eateries, boutiques and other shops and businesses and beautiful parks and open space.
