Afton
is a beautiful little town located in Lincoln County on the west-central border of Wyoming. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,911. Situated in the picturesque Star Valley, Afton sits at 6,239 feet above sea level and is a picture-perfect town. It's home to the world's largest elk horn arch - spanning 75 feet across four lanes of U.S. Highway 89. The arch consists of over 3,000 elk antlers and weighs 15 tons. The town of Afton was settled by Mormons along the Lander cutoff of the Oregon Trail. The town is centrally located in Star Valley at the mouth of Swift Creek Canyon. An interesting note: Afton was awarded the "Best Water in the Nation" award in 2005. Some of the attractions in town include Intermittent Spring (one of only three cold water geysers in the world,) the Historical Tabernacle, and Pioneer and Lancer Trail Museums. The Call Air Museum takes you back in time to experience early aviation in western Wyoming. In the wintertime, Afton is known for its' world-class snowmobiling on endless miles of groomed and ungroomed trails. Summertime activities include fishing the Grey's, Salt and Snake Rivers for trout, hiking, horseback riding, camping and ATV riding. There are miles of back-country trails around Afton, great for hiking, ATV riding or biking.

West-central Wyoming , on the Idaho border, the overall climate is relatively cool, due to its' elevation. Summers are warm during the day, but summer nights are almost invariably cool. Temperatures depend on the elevation, with the mountains and high valleys being much cooler with average lows in the middle of the summer in the 30s and 40s, with occasional drops below freezing. Lower elevations have lows in the 50s and 60s. In the wintertime it's normal to have rapid and frequent changes between mild and cold spells. The sun shines in Wyoming 60 percent of the time in the winter to about 75 percent during the summer. Precipitation ranges from 7 to 10 inches per year.

The closest airports in the area are the Big Piney Marbleton airport (BPI) located about 42 miles east of Afton in Big Piney, Wyoming, Ralph Wenz Field (PNA) located approximately 57 miles east of Afton in Pinedale, Wyoming, the Kemmerer Municipal airport (EMM) located roughly 65 miles south of Afton in Kemmerer, Wyoming, and finally the Driggs Reed Memorial airport (U59) located around 70 miles north of Afton in Driggs, Idaho.
