Thermopolis is located in northern Wyoming and is the largest city and county seat in Hot Springs County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 3,009 residents. Named for the Greek word meaning "hot city," Thermopolis is home to numerous natural hot springs which are heated by geothermal processes. The town of Thermopolis claims to have the world's largest mineral hot springs, which are part of Hot Springs State Park. The hot springs are open to the public for free as part of an 1896 treaty signed with the Shoshone and Arapaho Indian tribes. Hot Springs State Park includes two privately-owned water parks, along with a hospital, and several hotels and other businesses. The park is also home to a herd of bison, a suspension bridge across the Big Horn River, picnic shelters, flower gardens, the State Bath House and the petroglyph site at Legend Rock (some 25 miles from the main park). The town of Thermopolis is also the home to the Wyoming Dinosaur Center, which hosts the only Archaeopteryx fossil outside Europe.
