Shell is a tiny community located in Big Horn County in north-central Wyoming. As of the 2010 census, the population was 83 full-time residents. The community of Shell was named for the great abundance of fossil shells found in the surrounding area. Wikipedia says "nearby exposed formations such as the Cloverly Formation and the Morrison Formation have yielded numerous fossils of dinosaurs and other animals. Located to the west of the town is the Red Gulch Dinosaur Tracksite, a rare collection of dinosaur tracks from the Jurassic." The little community of Shell sits at the base of the Big Horn Mountains at the mouth of Shell Canyon. Shell Creek flows through the mountains and joins the Big Horn River just north of Greybull, Wyoming. Shell is mostly known to visitors for its' dude ranch and guest lodge. Families from all around the world come to Shell's 300,000-acre guest ranch for world adventures in riding, working cattle and fly-fishing. This area is unique in that it has elevations that range from 4,200 feet to 13,200 feet, and a variety of terrain and scenery. In addition, the ranch offers an array of other activities, such as hiking, canoeing, biking, four-by-four tours and more. The ranch limits guests to about 25 per week, making the experience more customized.

Shell Weather & Climate

The lower portion of the basin receives 5 to 8 inches and is the driest part of the state. The Big Horn Basin is a good example of how the effect of the mountains block the flow of moisture laden air from the east, as well as from the west.
