Green-River is a city located in Sweetwater County in southwestern Wyoming. As of the 2010 census, the population was 12,515. Green River was incorporated in 1868 in what was then called the Dakota Territory. The town was the starting point from which John Wesley Powell started his famous expeditions in the late 1800s of the Green and Colorado Rivers and the Grand Canyon. In 1868, the town of Green River had about 2000 residents, but it dwindled to just over 100 after the division point of the railroad was moved to another town further west. The town was on the verge of disappearing altogether when the Black Fork dried up due to a drought and the railroad was forced to move the division point back to Green River. An interesting note about the town is that it's one of the first in the United States to ban door-to-door solicitation. The city of Green River hosts the annual Flaming Gorge Days, which features concerts, basketball games, the Red Desert Road Runner 5K race, Festival in the Park, musical performances and much more. The jewel of Green River is Expedition Island Park. The Whitewater Park and North Channel Tubing projects were completed in the summers of 2008 and 2009, and enhanced the river that splits and surrounds the island where John Wesley Powell launched his historic expedition of the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon in 1869. The park includes a lazy river/tubing channel, a splash park, swimming and wading pools, and the Castle Falls Feature, which caters to intermediate and advanced kayakers, rafters and river runners.
