Gillette is located in northeastern Wyoming and had a population of 29,087 as of the 2010 census. The city of Gillette calls itself the "Energy Capital of the Nation," due to its development of vast quantities of coal, oil and coal bed methane gas production. It sits at an elevation of 4,546 feet above sea level and is a commercial center for the agricultural and mining industries located here. Tours of the coal mines are open for visitors to see how the "black gold" is extracted from the mountains. Other attractions in town include the new Cam-Plex Multi-Event Facility, which was completed in 2008. The Cam-Plex hosts events that range from concerts to rodeos, the county fair and the Winter Western Festival. The city of Gillette is also home to several parks, golf courses, swimming pools, a water slide and lots of dining options. Of course, northeastern Wyoming is a paradise for those who enjoy outdoor sports and nature experiences. Just a sampling of the things to do in the area include hiking, camping, white water rafting, float trips down the river, biking, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, photography and paleontology.

Gillette Weather & Climate

Northeastern Wyoming has a semi-arid climate, as does most of the state. The elevation in this region of northwestern Wyoming is around 4,500 feet. Winters are long and cold and summers are shorter and warm. Summer nights are almost always cool, even though daytime temps may be quite high. It's not uncommon for lows to dip in the 30s and 40s with occasional drops below freezing. In the winter, rapid and frequent changes between mild and cold spells is the normal pattern. The northeast part of the state is sometimes the only region affected by the cold air that slides eastward over the plains from the east side of the Continental Divide. Snow is usually not deep enough to cause severe conditions. Early freezes in fall and late in the spring result in a short growing season.
