Evanston is a historic railroad town, located in the southwest corner of the state of Wyoming. As of the 2010 census, the population was 12,359. The town of Evanston was named for James E. Evans, a surveyor for the Union Pacific Railroad. The railroad arrived in this area in 1868 and the town of Evanston was formed during the construction of the First Transcontinental Railroad. Efforts are underway to restore the old roundhouse and other railroad historical buildings in the downtown area. Evanston has a main street lined with historic buildings, cafes, novelty shops and antique stores. It's a lovely town, with peaceful walking paths, cottonwood trees and picnic areas along the stream that runs through the town. The nearby Bear River offers excellent fishing and other water sports such as kayaking, rafting, and tubing. The Ice Ponds are a unique place for fishing, paddle-boating, and kayaking in the summer and for ice skating in the winter. Bear River State Park, which adjoins the Bear River Greenway, offers picnicking, hiking, biking, wildlife viewing, cross-county skiing, snowshoeing, and sledding. The main trail of the Greenway follows the Bear River White Water Park and links Evanstons historic downtown with the ponds and nature trails, Bear Tales Fire Circle, live elk and buffalo exhibits at Bear River State Park, and the travel information center east of Evanston. The town of Evanston is also host to several special events during the year, including Cowboy Days, the annual Evanston Rodeo Series and the Fort Bridger Mountain Man Rendezvous.
