Encampment is a small Old West town located along the Colorado-Wyoming border in the south-central part of the state. The town is also known as "Grand Encampment." As of the 2010 census, the population was 450 residents. In the early 1900s, Encampment was a booming center of copper mining and smelting. At one time, a sixteen-mile tramway was built to carry copper ore from the mountains into the town for smelting. At the time, this steam powered tramway was the longest in the world. A large drop in copper prices and disastrous fires drove the mining company into bankruptcy, and operations at the mine ceased. There was also a large sawmill that operated in the town between 1950 and 1998. Encampment is home to the Grand Encampment Museum. It preserves the history of the area with over a dozen historical buildings filled with artifacts from the timber, mining, and agricultural eras of the Encampment valley. This whole region has a wealth of western historical sites and rich outdoor recreational opportunities. The Oregon Trail loops around and the railroad line that took the place of the Oregon Trail also runs through the area. Recreational activities near Encampment include trout fishing, hiking, camping, picnicking, snowmobiling, skiing and much more. There is even dinosaur excavation in the area at Como Bluff for those who enjoy historical research and archaeology.
