Cheyenne is the capital of Wyoming and located in the southeastern portion of the state. It's also the most populous city in the state, with a population of 59,466 as of the 2010 census. It's part of what is known as the Front Range Urban Corridor and the entire metropolitan area has a population of almost 92,000. In 1867, the "rough and tumble" settlement of Cheyenne mostly consisted of about 600 construction workers, some rowdy characters of a dubious nature and a few entrepreneurs. Today, it's still an Old West town, no doubt, but has grown into a major cultural and recreational center. Some of the attractions in town include the Wyoming State Museum, the Wyoming Transportation Museum, Cheyenne Little Theatre Players and the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum. The city of Cheyenne is also home to many parks and paths that make up the Greater Cheyenne Greenway. In 1996, Cheyenne was named "Trail Town USA" by the National Park Service and the American Hiking Society. The "Beaches of Cheyenne," which are located along the shores of Sloan Lake, offer fishing, hiking, biking, canoeing, and paddle boats. The Civic Center is host to the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, as well as an active theater season. Downtown Cheyenne's Depot Plaza is home to a summer Farmer's Market, restaurants and shops and more. The city is also home to Cheyenne Frontier DaysTM. Called the "Daddy of 'em All," it's the largest outdoor rodeo in the whole country, held the last full week in July. Aside from the rodeo, it features parades, pancake breakfasts, art shows, Native American art and culture, and concerts.

Cheyenne Weather & Climate

The southeast corner of Wyoming is a high plain situated between two mountain ranges. The elevation is about 7,000 feet. Due to the high elevation, the climate is semi-arid, with long winters and short, relatively cool summers. Temperatures in winter are cold, although there are often periods when Chinook winds, blowing down from the Rockies, bring warmer conditions. This generally happens on an average of 20 days between December and February. The greatest snowfall occurs in March and April. It averages 60 inches for the winter season, although thick snowfall rarely lasts long. Rainfall totals only about 10 inches per year. The southeastern plains have the most days of thunderstorm activity in the state. Sunshine is plentiful year round and this region experiences a day that is 90 degrees F. or warmer about once a year. The southeastern corner of the state is also the most vulnerable for tornado activity.
